Hispanic Heritage Month Starts this Month!
September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
🌟 A Brief History
Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The observance starts on September 15, a significant date marking the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, followed by Chile on September 18.
🎊 Ways to Celebrate in Las Vegas & Beyond
Whether you're looking to connect with culture, community, or cuisine, there are so many ways to celebrate!
📍 In Las Vegas:

Visit the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art – Often showcases Latinx artists during this month.
Dine at Local Latinx-Owned Restaurants – Support and savor delicious food at spots like Casa Don Juan, Lindo Michoacan, or Tacos El Gordo.
Clark County Library Events – Attend bilingual story times, cultural presentations, or film screenings (check the library calendar!).
🌎 Anywhere:
Learn & Share – Explore the stories of influential Hispanic leaders, artists, writers, and innovators. Share what you learn on social media.
Try a New Recipe – Cook a traditional dish like pupusas, empanadas, arroz con pollo, or arepas.
Support Latinx Creators – Read books, listen to podcasts, or watch movies by Hispanic and Latinx creators.
Dance It Out! – Host a mini dance night with salsa, bachata, or reggaeton music.
Create a Cultural Craft – Great for kids and families! Make papel picado, piñatas, or paint flags.
Let’s honor the rich heritage, resilience, and creativity of Hispanic and Latinx communities this month and beyond! ¡Vamos a celebrar! 🎉
Lets Talk About It 💛
While September brings new seasons, pumpkin everything, and festive vibes, it’s also Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. And here at Elevate Diversity, we’re taking a moment to remind you: you are not alone, and you are so deeply loved.
Mental health doesn’t always get the spotlight it deserves, especially in communities of color, LGBTQ+ spaces, and other underrepresented groups. But that’s why Elevate Diversity is here: to hold space, build connections, and create a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and safe to show up as their full self.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please know help is available. Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, for free and confidential support 24/7.
Here are a few ways you can take action this month:
Share resources from trusted organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and The Trevor Project
Attend or support local Vegas events focused on mental health and suicide prevention
Start a conversation, check in with your friends, your coworkers, and your community
Advocate for mental health support in your workplace, schools, and social spaces
Let’s keep showing up for each other, with compassion, honesty, and love. Together, we’re building something powerful and you’re an important part of it. 💛
See ya next month!
